Bizarre Story of Mr. Grześlak
Lef! | Installation, video work | The Mondriaanhuis Museum | Group exhibition | Amersfoort | 2022
In 2022, The Mondrian House Museum celebrated Mondrian’s 150th birthday by organizing an art exhibition, Lef!, featuring five selected artists who curated and presented their works. As one of the participating artists, I showcased a work inspired by closely observing a neighbor's everyday life. Beginning with the daily routines of Mr. Grześlak, the work gradually shifts from observation into fiction, weaving together humor and quiet drama.
What is really happening here? Mr. Grześlak appears to be an ordinary man, a quiet neighbor with a round belly and a seemingly predictable routine. Yet, every day, he vanishes for hours into the darkness of the basement, leaving his wife with only questions and growing suspicion. Watching through the keyhole, she sees nothing but fleeting silhouettes of people, just before the lights suddenly go out. What’s happening behind that closed door? As her concern turns into obsession, a strange disaster unfolds, their apartment begins to fill with water, slowly swallowing the space.
